The Yucatán Peninsula is revende for its cenotes – limestones sinkholes filled with water – and expert divers flock here for unparalleled expeditions. Chukum-Ha, inaccessible for decades and a former well, is just one of thousands. Near the small town of Valladolid, it’s 130 feet at its deepest point and covered in stalactites and stalagmites. There are several options: rappelling down 50 feet from the opening, ziplining, tope swinging or shopping in from plataforms ranking from three to 15 feet. Aventuras Mayas, the Company responsible for its adrenaline fuelled visits, intructed me to don a life jacket before I submerged myself in iridescent turquoise water in the darkness that enshrined the cenote. It was Cold, but the more I treaded, in awe at the depth of colour, the more I warmed up. And before I knew it, an hour had passed, and I marvelled at what had previously been undiscovered and unexplored.
